What drives you? What drove you 5, 10 or 20 years ago? Did you lose touch with one of your passions over the years?
That stuff happens. People grow out of hobbies. They have families, or jobs that take up a lot of their time. They discover new things to love. But what was the thing you lost a connect with that you're hoping to reconnect with in the next year?
Sorry for the infomercial pitch to start this off, but this topic makes me feel like I'm starting a motivational speech at some conference somewhere. It wasn't my intention, but I do feel strongly enough about this topic to host that sort of talk (won't be happening anytime soon though).
For me, that love was the game of poker. When I was in high school, I played a regular Sunday night poker game with my brother and his friends for nickels, dimes and quarters. Games ranged from the classics like Texas Hold 'Em and 7-Card Stud, to some more outlandish ones like "Screw Your Neighbor" or "3-5-7" (if you haven't heard of the last two, I certainly understand. They were a little out there).
Poker for me was a wonderful way to hang out with my friends, learn about strategy, and test my skills. I've prided myself on my ability to understand people. I think that's why I feel so comfortable as your Realtor®. If I can't understand the people I work with, I would need to find a new career very quickly.
In college at Syracuse University, I played at Turning Stone Casino in Verona, NY once or twice a week. I wrote many of my research papers on the players, dealers and lifestyle. I fell in love with that magic. So much so that when I have the opportunity to travel, I often go to Vegas. I just find that world so interesting.
Recently, I've had the chance to get back into the casino to start playing poker again. I've also had the chance to play for fun with some friends online. It brought back all of those feelings of passion I had for the game over the last 25 years. It's so exciting to be back in that world for a little while.
Full disclosure, I play tournament poker usually or for very low stakes. It's one of my forms of entertainment, and I never play above my means. I'm lucky to be able to put aside a little bit of money from time to time to use as my bankroll. If gambling is one of your passions, please do so responsibly,
Let's get back to you. What is your thing? If you've been away for a while, but still feel that connection. Maybe it's time for you to get back to it.
Here's hoping you can find a little time to reconnect with your passions. Or to keep engaging in those activities if you've been able to stay connected to them through all of your journeys.
It's important to make time to have a little fun every now and then.
Until next time,
Dave
